Will the Anti Cigarette Law in England Force Bingo Players Online?

Thursday, 6. January 2022

A lot has been talked in the press not long ago regarding the bingo industry being hit as a result of the cigarette ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive aid to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. But will the online version of this quintessential game provide a reprieve, or will it in no way compare to its land based kin?

Bingo has been an ancient game normally played by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game recently had undergone a recent increase in appeal with younger people deciding to visit the bingo halls in place of the clubs on a weekend. All this is about to be reversed with the introduction of the cigarette ban all over Britain.

No longer will players be able to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking off their numbers. From the summer of 2007 all public areas will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favored places where many people like to smoke.

The results of the cigarette ban can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already prohibited in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plummeted and the business is absolutely fighting for its life. But where have the players gone? Of course they have not forgotten this familiar game?

The answer is on the internet. Players realize that they can bet on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a drink and smoke and in the end, have a chance at big cash rewards. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened just about perfectly with the anti smoking law.

Of course betting on on the internet will never replace the social portion of going over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the law has left a good many bingo players with no choice.
