Could the Cigarette Ban in Britain Drive Bingo Players On to the Web?
Thursday, 1. January 2026
Much has been talked in the papers not long ago regarding the bingo industry singing the blues as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in England. Conditions have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for big tax cuts to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. But can the online version of this traditional game offer a lifeline, or might it in no way compare to its real life relative?
Bingo is an age old game normally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game recently had witnessed a recent increase in acceptance with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo parlours in place of the discos on a weekend. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the enforcement of the anti smoking law throughout United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be allowed to smoke whilst marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 all public places will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most common places where people enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the anti cigarette law can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already not allowed in the bingo parlors. Players have plummeted and the business is absolutely struggling for its life. But where did all the players go? Obviously they haven’t cast aside this age old game?
The answer is on the web. People know that they can bet on bingo using their computer whilst enjoying a drink and cig and in the end, enjoy monstrous jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course betting on on the internet is unlikely to replace the communal portion of going over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of players the governing edicts have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with little choice.
